Course Description

Following tooth extraction, there is a predictable change in alveolar ridge dimensions. The use of socket preservation protocols has been shown to limit these changes and helps to maintain normal anatomic contours. There are a variety of factors that determine the most appropriate protocol and materials that should be employed for each case. Dr. Fien reviews specific protocols that can be used to preserve alveolar ridge contours and regenerate alveolar ridge defects.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the factors that predispose the alveolar ridge to undergo resorption following tooth extraction
  • Understand how to minimize hard and soft tissue changes following tooth extraction
  • Understand the principles of socket preservation at the time of tooth extraction
  • Learn specific socket preservation protocols to manage extraction sites for future implant placement
  • Learn specific techniques to perform horizontal ridge augmentation with bio absorbable materials
