Course Description

Emerging research continues to explore the relationship between oral health and systemic health, including potential links to metabolic health and overall wellness. This course examines the role of the oral cavity in supporting vascular, neuronal, and immunological function through nitric oxide (NO) pathways.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule involved in numerous physiological processes, yet its production declines with age. Recent research has highlighted the potential role of healthy commensal oral bacteria in supporting nitric oxide production, as well as their contribution to oral health.

Using the Wizard of Oz theme, we'll deconstruct the science of nitric oxide and explore the bacterial communities that are reshaping our understanding of prevention, treatment, and oral-systemic health. Participants will examine the current evidence surrounding nitric oxide pathways and discuss how these concepts may inform preventive strategies and clinical decision-making in dental practice. By the end of the journey, participants may find that the "ruby slippers" have been there all along - representing new ways to apply emerging evidence in everyday dental practice. 

Attendees will also receive a patient handout and a 22-page professional reference guide.

  • Identify common chronic health conditions that may influence oral health and dental treatment planning
  • Describe nitric oxide (NO), its pathways of production, and its role in normal physiological function
  • Explain how metabolites and ecological niches contribute to the development and function of the oral microbiome
  • Describe the role of nitrate-reducing oral bacteria in supporting nitric oxide production
  • Implement clinical protocols that support nitric oxide production and commensal oral bacterial communities during patient care

Holly Moons, CRDH, has practiced periodontal dental hygiene since 2000. She has served in multiple roles on local and state boards, belongs to several study clubs, and continues to publish and speak nationally. Holly advocates for a collaborative dental-medical model focused on reducing chronic diseases. Her passion for microbiology drives her research on polymicrobial synergy, pathogenic virulence factors, and emerging concepts in biofilm expression
