Course Description

For decades, credit cards have been a staple in dental practice transactions, yet this convenience comes with a growing and often overlooked financial burden. Modern dental practices may lose significant revenue annually to processing fees, impacting overall practice profitability and operational performance.

While some practices choose to pass surcharges onto patients, this approach can create friction and negatively affect the patient experience. This course explores the historical emergence of credit card reliance in dentistry and examines alternative strategies that move beyond the traditional “practice pays” or “patient pays” model.

Attendees will explore evolving payment approaches and workflows that may help practices improve collections, support case acceptance, and enhance operational efficiency while maintaining a positive patient experience. The course will also discuss consumer payment behaviors and practical considerations for implementing modern payment infrastructure within the dental practice environment.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common financial and operational challenges associated with payment collection workflows in dental practices
  • Differentiate traditional payment processing models from integrated and embedded payment technologies used in modern healthcare environments
  • Evaluate how payment workflows and financial communication strategies may influence patient experience, case acceptance, collections, and operational efficiency
  • Discuss how patient payment preferences and consumer behavior can impact practice revenue cycle management and overall practice performance
