Modern Solutions for Biofilm Management and Fluoride-Free Remineralization

Today’s patients and providers are looking for more effective oral health products that are made with safe ingredients. However, with an ever-growing list of available products, it’s hard to know which standout, and it’s easy to be overwhelmed.

I’ve spent the last several years trying different oral health products so I’m able to make informed recommendations. From all the products I have personally tried, Cocofloss and Cocoshine from Cocolab® are top-tier in terms of effectiveness, ease of use, and overall user experience. After trying these products themselves, other Catapult evaluators agree.

It's all in the details

The Cocofloss and Cocoshine products [Figure 1] were put to the test by 34 Catapult Evaluators, and the results show promising advancements. Through the use of eco-friendly designs and non-toxic ingredients, Cocolab created a brand positioned at the forefront of modern developments in oral health products. Cocoshine
  • Fluoride-free, nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA)-based toothpaste
  • Formulated with nanoXIM
    CarePaste, a water-based suspension of 15.5% rod-shaped nHA particles that yields 3% nHA concentration
  • Relative Dentin Abrasion (RDA)
    value of 37 
  • Basic pH >7
  • Third-party tested & proven to
    respect the oral microbiome 
  • No sulfates, parabens, propylene

Cocofloss

Cocofloss is soft, textured dental floss that expands when it comes in contact with saliva, creating maximum surface area for effective biofilm removal while also lowering gingival inflammation by incorporating coconut oil, a known antimicrobial [Figure 2]. My favorite feature of Cocofloss is the expanding fibers. Using dental floss with a greater surface area that also expands to fill the varying sizes of the nooks and crannies of teeth and restorative margins is essential for optimal biofilm removal. 

Catapult evaluator feedback:

  • 82.86% of evaluators preferred Cocofloss over their current floss
  • While the majority (54.29%) found ease of use to be similar to other brands, 74.29% felt Cocofloss is more comfortable during use, and 85.71% agreed that it is more effective in biofilm and debris removal 
  • Overall, 94.12% of evaluators said they would recommend Cocofloss to others, 51.52% plan to switch to Cocofloss for their own hygiene routines, with an additional 39.39% considering a switch to Cocofloss

One noted critique is that the thickness of Cocofloss can sometimes make it harder to use in tight contacts or around heavily restored dentition, but overall, the increase in effective biofilm removal made it worth this occasional challenge.

Cocoshine

This mineral-enhanced toothpaste meets modern demands for effective yet safe ingredients. It provides remineralization through nHA and supports a healthy oral microbiome and oral pH levels with support ingredients such as xylitol, coconut oil, and baking soda. Additionally, its low RDA value offers whitening benefits without tooth sensitivity.

I often have to educate my patients on the fact that we don’t want to use a toothpaste that foams so much that we look

like we may have rabies. With Cocoshine, the smooth, non-foaming texture allows for more bristle-to-tooth contact, which ultimately results in improved biofilm removal—the goal of brushing our teeth [Figure 3]. Plus, the subtle flavor freshens

breath without being overpowering. 

Catapult evaluator feedback:

  • Compared to other toothpaste brands, 46.88% preferred the taste of Cocoshine, and 61.29% preferred the texture of Cocoshine
  • Overall, 71.88% of evaluators said they would recommend Cocoshine to others, with over 80% planning to or considering switching to Cocoshine themselves

Most evaluators felt Cocoshine gave them similar performance and effectiveness when compared to other toothpastes, and the majority felt it had better taste and texture. Many also said Cocoshine is a great option for individuals looking for an effective, non-fluoride toothpaste.

Gone are the days of oral care products that leave patients with residual biofilm, inflammation, and sensitivity. Through
