Dental professionals appreciate the need for proper hygiene in maintaining the health of their patients and that a key feature of this includes plaque control. Clinical research shows that optimal approaches to plaque control and gingivitis include thorough brushing and flossing and the use of antimicrobials added to toothpastes and mouth rinses. Antimicrobial agents such as stannous fluoride dentifrice, in fact, produce significant effects in reducing gingivitis. However, they, and other antimicrobial toothpastes are surprisingly often not strongly advocated by professionals.
In this 1-hour video, Don White, PhD will discuss new discoveries that reveal in more clarity just how anti-microbials such as stannous fluoride work in treating and preventing gum diseases. These discoveries show that toxic bacteria are present in the sulci of persons in both clinically diseased and healthy sites. Stannous fluoride dentifrice shows efficacy in deactivating plaque virulence in both diseased as well as healthy sites. Significant efficacy appears to be derived from actions of stannous fluoride in both deactivating microbial pathogens and their metabolites. This evidence helps support the numerous benefits antimicrobial dentifrices for patients.

Don White, PhD is a Research Fellow with oversight for oral biology research in the Advanced Technology and Innovation Oral Care group at The Procter and Gamble Company in Mason, Ohio. The research focus of the Oral Biology laboratory can be described as ‘translational oral biology’ which includes identification of new ingredients, formulations and treatment regimens for the mitigation and prevention of chronic diseases of the oral cavity including dental caries, periodontal disease and tooth hypersenstivity.
Dr. White has a particular interest in applying his developed knowledge in pharmacology and therapeutics to special needs groups including those with limited access to professional care and demographic groups with unique challenges such as patients with systemic conditions affecting oral health and the aging population.
